ABET District Coordinators
Adult Basic Eduation and Training (ABET) is available to adults who want to finish their basic education. An outcomes-based programme that aims to provide basic learning tools, knowledge and skills, and that equips participants with nationally recognised qualifications.
Anyone who cannot read, write and count, mainly adults who want to attain qualifications in a flexible environment, may register with any ABET centre. The ABET centres may conduct placement tests to determine whether you, the learner, are at level one, two or three.
The four levels of ABET training are equivalent to Grades R to 9.
ABET includes training in:
language, literacy and communication
mathematical literacy, mathematics and mathematical science
natural science
arts and culture
life orientation
technology
human and social science
economic and management science
Learners can also choose to take courses in:
small, meidum and micro enterprises (SMMEs)
tourism
agricultural science
ancillary health care
ABET programmes are overseen by the National ABET Board.

- Apply to an ABET centre in person.
- Register with a centre near you.
- Have available your official birth certificate or identity document.
- Have available any of your school records.

ABET Centres are typically housed in community learning centres managed by local communities and supported by the Education Department. Those wishing to operate ABET centres must register them with the Eastern Cape Education Department.
