Eastern Cape is ready for the Nation

One would expect a learners’ oratory competition to be all about speeches and nothing else. The Anglo American Young Communicators Awards (YCA) however not only focuses on giving exposure to some of the best young communicators in the country but also nurturing leadership skills, English proficiency and a sense of self confidence. This exciting and far-reaching public speaking competition is focused mainly on young second and third language English learners. Since its commencement, this event has become one of the most preferred public speaking competitions for many South African schools.

Once again this year, the judges have made a decision; Mati Ndhlovu from Claredon Girls High School will represent the Eastern Cape at the national final of the 2010 Anglo American Young Communicator Awards on the 20th of August. From the enlightening speeches delivered at this event, it was a difficult decision to make. Although all the other learners rendered sensible and insightful speeches, only one stood out from the rest to receive top provincial honours. Ndhlovu displayed outstanding confidence and an understanding of the topic “Chained Freedom” in front of the judges and managed to talk her way to the national final. It has been a long journey up to now for Ndhlovu, and she has shown remarkable improvement from district level up to the provincial level and now to the national finals. From this well delivered rendition, Ndhlovu seems to be a natural in public speaking. Her technique and approach to the topic and general presentation skills proves that practice really does make perfect.

“These youngsters have various ambitions from engineering, to communications to politics and the skills they acquire from this competition create an important platform to succeed in their chosen fields one day. By engaging them in thoughtful discussion and debates, YCA aims to foster confident young leaders who are able to use their talents and visions to shape a bright future for themselves and the nation,” states Anglo American South Africa’s Executive Director, Godfrey Gomwe.

Kwanele Nomoyi from Alexandra Road High School was the first runner-up with a well delivered presentation on the topic “The Good Day Recipe”. Coming third was Zizo Gxowa of Queenstown Girls High School, who gave a well researched speech on the topic, “Gender Pyramid”.

Year after year, the YCA continues to produce young and talented communicators who will in the near future take leadership of this country. This is one of the efforts of Anglo American to promote youth development and community partnerships in Eastern Cape and South Africa as a whole. Mabuya demonstrated that Eastern Cape is ready for the national finals.  Source: www.angloamerican.co.uk
