Minister's Media Statement regarding the decision by SADTU to strike

The Department of Basic Education has noted the decision taken last night by the National Executive Council of the South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (SADTU) to embark on strike action from 05 August 2010.

The Minister of Basic Education, Ms. Angie Motshekga remains hopeful that the strike by educators can still be averted. The Minister, together with other Ministers, are scheduled to meet on Thursday to develop a collective approach in this regard.

“I call upon all learners, especially matriculants to remain focused on their studies”, says Minister Motshekga.

We call on all our learners to do the best they can to access our academic support initiatives through this time. We will also request our senior officials, parents and civil society to assist our learners during this difficult time.

We call on parents and care givers of younger learners to take extra care and ensure that their children are supervised and provided with guidance at all times.

As the responsible employer, we wish to assure learners and their parents, and South Africans in general, that we do have plans in place to mitigate the negative effects of a teachers’ strike on the future of our learners.

how can the government suggest and conclude of adding R10 to housing allowance? can R10 even buy a launch for a grade R child? this is totally an insult and humiliating. we are just asking of what belongs to us. we also need to enjoy the national cake, we need our 8.6%.

we teachers are asking to be rich like those in parliament and other ministers. all we are asking is what we desire, what is rightfully ours. we are not asking too much. 8.6% of a notch is nothing. why are they so stingy to give out few rands. i am teaching in a village which is deprived of electricity and network, we also lack some LTSMs. almost the teachers in my school use their monthly salary to organise some study materials for the learners.
the strike will surely proceed if the government fails to do this for us.

I think this 6.5%is nothing to us the employees of government bcoz, we use public transport rent, rates and electricity esp. in urban areas and this R630 housing allowance too tittle.

We should note that teachers are negotiating with people who get paid more that 4 times their (teachers') salary, and whose kids attend priviledged private schools. I challenge everyone to keep your ears and eyes open for the next increase of the government officials' salaries. Again, it will be ludicrous. To them this whole strike thing is all a joke.

Teachers, learners and parents - the concerned and affected group of the society - please keep on praying for these 'senior officials and ministers' to stop playing with your feelings and start to put a 2digits offer for the teachers. They are not aware that some teachers need this increment not for their pockets but they also buy some important teaching resources for them to help your children in class. Also pray for them to provide schools with Learning, Teaching Support Materials (LTSM) in time. Some of the senior officials know nothing about teaching and learning but 'babysit' the teachers and do not want to 'babysit' babies (children).Learners won't gain anything but teachers will be charged huge amounts and still remain behind schedule. They always 'hope' that the strike will be averted and do sweet nothing in terms of bettering the offer so that the strike can be averted.
