The Department of Basic Education has noted the decision by the National Professional Teachers’ Organisation of South Africa (Naptosa) and the Suid Afrikaanse Onderwysers Unie (SAOU) to join the nationwide teachers’ strike.

We have also noted the call by Naptosa in particular to all its members to act in a disciplined fashion and to refrain from acts of intimidation and violence. The Department calls on all other unions to take a similar public stand against any of their members making themselves guilty of inflammatory statements, intimidation or violence.

The Department respects the constitutional right of teachers to strike. We have made it clear though that the principle of No Work No Pay will be strictly applied for the duration of the strike. All provincial departments have put the necessary measures in place to ensure that they can make the necessary deductions with immediate effect. All teachers who have joined the industrial action will have their salaries docked in the next salary run which for most teachers will be 15 September 2010.

i think this is really dad. to think that there is no dignity left in th teaching profession because of the higher authority, if you look closely at the condtions that many teachers work under to get an insulting pay at the end of the day in the suppossedly new democatric country!! wow i am really embarrased. i think that the government has insulted them enough to the extent they are falling out of the so called middle class to lower class yet they are professionals. this is truely an abusive relationship between the government and its emplyers!! shame on you

Ag! Shame! Poor DoE is disappointed by their best donkeys. They have also decided to join the strike action.Even you Brutus!!! DoE should remember that all these are teachers and they also get low salaries at the end of the day.DoE should stop strangling teachers. Who is going to look after the wonderful state resources? This principle of No Work No Pay induces more anger and shows that the dept does not care about workers' grievances. Give teachers 86% not 8.6% please.Monies should be deposited with immediate effect.
