The Department of Basic Education is working closely with the Eastern Cape Department of Education to find speedy solutions to the problems faced by the province. These include serious problems related to learner transport, school nutrition, the termination of the contracts of temporary teachers, Learning and Teaching Support Materials (LTSM) and the ongoing problem of school infrastructure.
The situation in the Eastern Cape Education Department is being addressed at the highest level. The Minister of Basic Education, Mrs Angie Motshekga, MP and Deputy Minister Enver Surty, MP visited the province two weeks ago to discuss the situation with the Premier and the MEC for Education. On 15 February 2011 the Director-General of Basic Education, Mr Bobby Soobrayan led a delegation to the Eastern Cape and met with the Superintendent-General of the Education Department to discuss the problems of the province, as well as to consider possible solutions.
The Director-General has since provided the Minister with a report on his visit to the province and Minister Motshekga is considering this report. Minister Motshekga is expected to make an announcement on the nature of a sustainable intervention in support of education in the Eastern Cape, in due course.
