Article by Minister Angie Motshekga

I have received a report from a high level team sent to the Eastern Cape Provincial Education Department, comprising the Director-General of Basic Education, the DPSA, and Provincial and National Treasury Departments on the recent developments in that province.

The team is the process of finalizing a report in terms of the nature and scope of the intervention that has to be made collaboratively with the Province. In addition, it is considering the legal and constitutional processes and consequences of any contemplated intervention.

Our legal team is currently in direct consultation with the province. The team will revert to the Ministry by Friday morning (25 February 2011), after which I and the  Eastern Cape Premier in consultation with the  Presidency, will make known the specific interventions.

On the court matter that saw the Bisho Magistrate court award an interim court order against the province to reinstate thousands of temporary teachers whose contracts have been terminated, we would like to clarify that the Ministry of Basic Education was not  cited as a respondent in the matter.

We regard the suspension of the contracts of those teachers as one of the critical areas of intervention, and will be working with the province to find an immediate solution.

I would like to assure the public and most importantly parents, learners and our stakeholders in the Eastern Cape that we regard the situation in the Eastern Cape as extremely urgent, and are therefore working around the clock to remove all hurdles that hamper teaching and learning in the province.

All stakeholders are relieved that DBE will help ECDOE to overcome its problems..Thanx for the urrent leadership to bring stability to this organization. What happened in 2010 was a disastrous action by all affected.Let all the stakeholders be reminded that they must guard after the welfare of their children. Both professional and corporate employees are championing/advances the right of the child, quality education.

In discharging this noble task, let the employees perform their duties, without any fear or threat from individuals who claim to represent te interest of others.Let the leaders be vigilant in making sure that everyone performs the task without intimidation. Please protect your people

Its unfortunate that the turn around strategy has taken so much time to be implemented. How are the learners without teachers going to make up for the lost time? Our province is one of the lowest in terms of performance and we had a shortage of teachers in maths and science some of whom we have already lost to other provinces. Where are we going to get them. It means some learners will go without these teachers for the rest of the year, The powers be should act fast in resolving this problem.

Motshekga is failing now, we need the intervention of the president himself. On the opening of the parliament he spoke abt job creations and yet we r qualified to teach but no jobs for us. Hayi khona Zuma and ur Sadtu has failed us too.

Please stop paying this 37% to temporal teachers bcos that is what is also contributing in the lack of funds. Can u re-instate the temp teachers bcos learners are suffering. How can a school not have a Phy teacher for grade12. EC is the least perfoming schl but we still get an SG that's gonna ask of where the money is gonna come frm for paying temp teachers?
