Patricia Edley, Chief Education Specialist (CES) for Assessment and Examinations Directorate has come to the end of her journey at the Eastern Cape Department of Education after 39 years of dedicated service.
Starting at humble beginnings in the Guateng Province, as a teacher at Dawn View High School, Edley started her passionate journey “working for the kids.” Six years ago she relocated to the Eastern Cape and joined the team at Exams.
Mzimhle Mabona, Head of Assessment and Examinations in the Eastern Cape Department of Education has learned many things from Edley, but the one thing that stood out to him the most was “whatever differences you have, you don’t have to move your eyes from the target.”
Paying tribute to her in an honour of short speech in his office at Assessment and Exams in King William's Town, Mabona says he is grateful for the tremendous input Edley has put in over the past 6 years for the department.
He describes Edley as an outspoken, a strong character, challenges you, excellent project manager, very warm, supportive and highly focused person.
“Edley has been so humbled by her experience at the department; she was passionate and had a great love for her job,” says Mabona.
Mabona says the ultimate reward for the leader of people is to be able to say, “I saw someone grow today, and I helped.” When reading this quote he refers to Edley as being this exact kind of person. I am passionate about the contribution she has made and would like her to know.
“Patricia Edley, enjoy your retirement, you have played your part in the team and you were the best team member, thank you for everything,” Mabona concludes.
Edley wants future leaders at the department to apply this one principle, “Earn your salary everyday,” if everybody had to do their bit and seriously work everyday, the department could be one of the leading departments in the country.
“My strength comes from the Lord I serve. My service has been in God’s name. I tribute any success to His name.
