EC Gov. Departments get together at Keiskammahoek
Article by Cheera-Dee Robinson
Eastern Cape Government Departments got together at Graceland Hotel in Keiskammahoek on the 14th April 2011, to inform Grade 11 and 12 learners from the area on bursaries they have to offer them. Monde Skeyi from the ANC Constituency Office in collaboration with Khaya Matiso, Director at Mission Vale campus of Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU), who is originally from Keiskammahoek organized the function as they wanted to do something for the learners in the area.
Gerhardt Botha, Deputy Chief Education Specialist (DCES) representing Eastern Cape Department of Education (ECDoE) said there are three different types of bursaries available in the department (MEC’s Awards, B Ed Learnership and Funza Lushaka). These bursary schemes enable citizens to obtain bursaries for full-time studies at accredited institutions.
MEC Awards
He said this award goes to the top achiever in each district on a yearly basis. Each student will receive R50 000 towards their university studies. This includes study fees, accommodation, meals and study material.
B Ed Learnership
He said learners can apply for this bursary at their district offices. He said learners with high results will be given first preference. The duration of a B Ed Degree is usually four years. If you pass your first year the Department will automatically pay for your following year. This bursary will also require you to work for the Department, for the number of years you study.
Funza Lushaka
This bursary is for people who want to become educators. People should apply for this bursary at the University of their Choice instead of the district office. The R50 000 is sponsored from National Department of Education in Pretoria. The bursary targets previously disadvantaged communities and whose parents cannot afford to send their children to institutions of higher learning. People, who want to apply for Funza Lutshaka bursary, can do by logging onto www.ecdoe.gov.za and click on Funza Lushaka Bursary to apply Online.
Successful bursary recipients will be required to send a mid-term report. The final payment will be released on receipt of an end of the term report. At this point, the department will require to see evidence of work achieved successfully. “You never know, you just might get it, the world is your oyster at your age concluded, “Botha.
