The Department of Education in collaboration with Bonnita Milk, Old Mutual and Via Africa Publishers showcased the South African Choral Eisteddfod in Mthatha at Walter Sisulu University, Zamulungisa Campus recently.
Eastern Cape Education Superintendent General, Modidima Mannya graced the occasion, giving them a message of hope. “This event is for the children, enjoy and make the best of it. We love you.” He later handed out the first prize trophies to the winning schools.
Schools competed in different categories from seven mega districts. They competed in Soprano Solo, Mezzo Soprano Solo, Tenor Solo, Baritone Bass Solo, Mixed Double Quartet, Western, Afrikaans/African, Mixed Choir Open Own Choice, Mixed Choir HIV/Aids and a Bonnita Jingle.
Incentives were given to the school that came up with the best jingle for Bonnita Milk. R5000 was given to the winning primary school, R10 000 to senior phase and R25 000 to the winning FET college.
Learners also had to act out a short play on HIV/Aids to make people aware of it and how you can keep yourself healthy when you got it.
This event was a huge success, the learners performed well and the judges were pleased. The over all winners of this competition was Alfred Nzo. They will be competing against other provinces in the National School Choral Eisteddfod from the 30 June to 03 July 2011 at Heartfelt Arena, Thaba Tshwane, Pretoria.
