Clarendon Girls School wins 2011 provincial quiz competion

Clarendon Girls High School proved to be the most economic knowledgeable team as they obtained the highest marks in the 2011 Quiz Competition organized by the Eastern Cape Department of Education (ECDoE) in King William’s Town on 24 June 2011.

In its endeavor to expose learners to the trade and industry field, the (ECDoE) provided learners with the platform to partake in economic quiz competition.  The competition has three levels, district, provincial and national.

According to Noluthando Kapela, the 2011 Quiz Competition coordinator, the initiative of the competition was aimed at developing the awareness of young people about economic challenges, especially the scarcity of resources. She said, furthermore, the brainpower competition was directed towards capacitating students with economic and financial knowledge.

In this year’s competition, 11 schools from various Eastern Cape districts took part. In the competition, each district was represented by a team of three learners.

Welcoming participants, the Director for Early Childhood Development (ECD) Unathi Nqandela urged participants to be calm and collected. “All questions both essay type and multiple choices are within the school curriculum, so please do not panic,” she added.

Nqandela continued saying that the department drives great pleasure having brains behind the initiative. “We hope that learners will take this seriously and become the doctors, lawyers and accountants   of tomorrow. Furthermore the department’s aim is to mould learners to be leaders of the near future, therefore you must plan your lives as to what you want to be in future”, said Nqandela.

All participants were given 30 multiple choice questions and had two minutes to answer each question and essay type question to answer in 30 minutes as well.

The certificates of participation were presented by ECDoE Curriculum Management and Development Chief Director, Suren Govender to all partakers and trophies were presented only to the top three schools. Govender described the learners participation in the competition as voluntary initiative which according to him to be a victory for participants.

“To the winners (Clarendon Girls High), take this trophy to your school and the ECDoE wishes you all the best as you go and represent the EC province in Gauteng,” concluded Govender.  Clarendon High School is expected to represent the Eastern Cape Province at the 2011 National Quiz Competition to be held at the University of Johannesburg on the 23rd of September 2011.
