Honouring Nelson Mandela Day on 18 July 2011, the Eastern Cape Department of Education School Nutrition Programme (SNP) Directorate sacrificed 67 minutes to Jongilanga High School in East London District, donating a kitchen.Mandela Day is an annual international day adopted by the United Nations in honour of him. Tata Nelson Rholihlahla Mandela spent 67 years of his life fighting for the rights of humanity with a vision to live in a free and democratic country, years later an initiative was born and 67 minutes to do good for others was its core aim.
Celebrating this important day, the Nutrition, Poverty Alleviation and Rural Development Directorate in partnership with national, provincial and district officials led by Zolile Ngaba, Acting Chief Director for Education Social Support Services (ESSS). “We monitored the school over a period of time and due to lack of facilities found that, the Volunteer Food Handlers at the school had to cook on a fire outside everyday, irrespective of the weather for 208 high school learners,” said Unathi Sihlahla Assistant Director of SNP.
The team then worked hard to come up with ideas on how to sponsor this school with a mobile kitchen. After failed attempts in awarding a tender for provision of mobile kitchens, the department entered into an agreement with King Hintsa Public Further Education Training (FET) College who has the skills to make this project a success.
As part of the team's 67 minutes they spent the day at the school and actually cooked for the school learners. They cooked stiff pap, pumpkin, spinach and soup. The students were delighted with their meal. They also then officially donated the mobile kitchen to the school. The team has not just stopped there, but has gone the extra mile by doing the same thing for Msobomvu Senior Secondary School in Butterworth and Bomkolo High School in Idutywa.
Xolani Gqoloqa, principal of Jongilanga High School said, “A big thank you to the team, this will definitely make a big difference.”
“Poverty is rife in this community and a feeding scheme is essential, so to you we are truly greatful,” added Gqoloqa.

In early 60’s and 70’s our country was dark with blood of our hero’s like Hector Peterson, but now its bright and colourful again.
Now as a black person I can go to any school or library and study and prepare for a bright future. Because of what you did racism and discrimination are breaking and we are proud of that.
