This year’s commutations themed “ooMama babekhona emzabalazweni” was aimed at recognizing and honouring women’s input in the struggle for the liberation of this country. According to the speakers on the day, it was the reason opting for the outskirts to ensure that rural women also participate in the celebrations.
Addressing the full-packed Port St Johns stadium, Majodina stated that Port St Johns was chosen to host women’s day commemoration because of amongst others, the rapidly increasing rate of teenage pregnancy, drug abuse, theft and the huge number of learner dropping out at school.
‘’Women in this region are not yet free, therefore lets join hands in the fight against women abuse. Remember, almost yearly a handful cases involving the brutal killing of women are reported in Pondoland and that is totally unacceptable”, said Majodina.
An emotional Majodina lambasted the recent maliciously killing of a 65 year old woman accused of witchcraft at Mayalweni Location near Lusikisiki.
“Let’s unite and keep our societies trouble free”, pleaded Majodina.
During the celebrations, fifty underprivileged families in the Green informal settlement near Port St John’s received food parcels donated by the Social Development department.
Amongst the dignitaries who graced the occasion was Premier Noxolo Kiviet, who also urged all women to take ownership of their lives. “I respectfully urge women to stand up and join hands in praying for the Lord’s intervention in the fight for violent free society”, said Kiviet.
Apart from the economic opportunities presented to women by government, Kiviet further commended the role played by women in this country’s revolution. “Since women are known of nurturing and warmth, I urge you to ensure that each learner who is of school going age returns to school now.
