No violence against women campaign kicks off Pretoria - Today marks the start of the 16 days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign, with a number of activities planned to raise awareness around women abuse expected to take place within the next two weeks.

Minister for Women, Children and People with Disabilities, Lulu Xingwana and Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane will be hosting the opening ceremony at the Saulsville Arena in Atteridgeville.

The event will focus on addressing problems of domestic violence and a visit to a victim empowerment centre.

The international campaign takes place every year from 25 November - which is International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women - to 10 December - which is International Human Rights Day. The period includes Universal Children's Day, International Day for Disabled Persons and World Aids Day.

Although the global campaign focuses on violence against women only, South Africa added children to its campaign because of the high incidence of child abuse in the country.

The South African government runs the 16 Days of Activism Campaign to create public awareness of the negative impact of violence on women and children and to encourage collective action against all types of abuse and its prevention in our communities.

The campaign serves as a catalytic mechanism to support government outcomes on gender equality and the protection of children and other vulnerable groups.

It actively supports the priorities of government to empower women, in particular rural women grappling with the challenge of unemployment and poverty; and protects the rights of the child.

This year's campaign will be held under the theme: "From Peace in the Home to Peace in the World: Proliferation of small arms and their role in domestic violence".

Very true UR
If and only if all men can say no violence against Women can be done in our name, we will be living in a pearceful world, BUt unfortunately not thre are still many men that believe in women abuse that means that 16 days of activism campaign is going to continue as long we still receive reports that women are still abused in a big way.

I find it shocking that we are living in a society where we have the need for these types of campaigns. It is a reflection of the lack of morality and violent and abusive as well as cowardice characters of some people, mostly men. I am so thankfull that I am not a man because I would have felt so embaressed. Fortunately not all men are such weakling.
Men are much stronger (physically) than women and the reason for this is so that they can PROTECT women and children, NOT ABUSE them. I am calling on all men with spines to stand up straight and PROTECT women agains these cowardise abusers. Let us rid society of these pathetic weaklings and stand up for the right of women and children to live safely and freely in SA. Fathers must set an example to their sons in order to break this horrible chain of abuse.

Men have the responsibility to care for their children and the women who give birth to the child. Whenever I hear about a young girl leaving a baby somewhere, I ask : where is the man who impregnated her? Why is she the only one who must carry the blame and responsibility of the child? Men must be held accountable for their actions. They can not just rape and impregnate women and girls and then abandon them. They should also be charged and more severely not just for rape, but also for abandonment of a pregnant women and a newborn child.
