About 17 learners from the Eastern Cape’s primary and high schools will today the 9th of December be jetting off to Durban, to attend a Children’s Peace and Empowerment national dialogue starting in Durban from the 11th to the 14th of December 2011.
‘Team Eastern Cape’ as the group is affectionately known, will be accompanied by four provincial adult coordinators and facilitators in this trip. The team was selected on the basis of their participation in the previous Provincial Children’s Peace and Empowerment Dialogue that was held on September3, 2011 in King William’s Town.
The four- day national dialogue is scheduled to take place at the Pavilion Hotel in Durban. The National Umtapo Centre has agreed to transport, cater for and accommodate Team Eastern Cape with its facilitators and coordinators, due to financial constraints encountered by the department.
Considerations which were used to select the team members include good leadership skills, public speaking and the passion demonstrated by each member, and the role played by the member during the formation of Peace Clubs in their respective schools.
The Peace Clubs Initiative is a joint venture between the Education Department, Umtapo Centre and the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund, in an attempt to curb the scourge of crime and violence in schools. In the Eastern Cape province, the Children’s Peace and Empowerment Forums (CPEF’s) has been escalated from primary schools, secondary schools up to tertiary institutions, thanks to the passion displayed by its members thus far.
