Cradock tops Eastern Cape Matric Results

The Honourable MEC of Eatern Cape Department of Education Mandla Makupula officially released the 2011 grade 12 national senior certificate examination results at the Education Leadership Institute in East London on the 5th January 2012.

The Eastern Cape got a result of 58.1%, which was a mere .02% decrease from the 2010 matric results.  Despite many major factors, the results were consistent and stabilized in comparison to the previous year’s results.

There are many factors that affect the results, but amongst the critical were Scholar Transport, School Nutrition Programme (SNP), Learner Teacher Support Material (LTSM) only being delivered in June opposed to January and the high absenteeism rate especially from teachers.  These critical areas have been recognized and action has been taking place, where monitoring and evaluation will be closely watched this year.

The Department of Education in collaboration with the Department of Transport has worked hard to ensure that all learners be transported to and from school daily this year.

On the 11 January 2012 all text books for the CAPS programme for grade 1-3 and 10 will be delivered to schools.  The 13 January 2012 marks the date where all stationary will be delivered at schools.  These are just a few major responsibilities where the department has prioritized to ensure better results at the end of this year.

For 2011 Cradock was the best performing District with a pass rate of 73.8%.  The most improved District is Mt Fletcher with a 13.5% increase from last year.

Makupula says:  “Education must not only be about learning but also teaching learner’s values like solidaritory, respect impatience to injustice and self respect.”  He further went on to say “the benchmark for this year is 65% and by all means we will try and achieve this.” Download Top Achievers NSC Matric Results Release 2011.

There are various factors that has caused the decrease in the Matric results but the number one (1) culprit is SADTU. Over-expenditure of the department is highly influenced by additional educators and SADTU for many years has been a stumbling block of the redeployment process. They have adopted a culture of “our way or we will destabilize the schools”. Management succumb to this custom because of SADTU’s success rate of eliminating their opponents in the previous years. Despite Mannya’s personality weakness, their fight against him is to retain control which they have lost since he took over the department. Amongst other things the so called poor senior managers were employed during their era of authority as the Eastern Cape Department was being administered like a political organisation (The corporate branch serves as an example former teachers hold senior positions). It is no good to cause chaos and blame others for poor managing your anarchy.

It is unfortunate that the MEC did not see the issue of tempororay educators as one of the causes of the failure of the matric results in the province. If one school can loose 3 teachers in Physical Sc,Accounting and Maths for the first 3 months in 2011, would you expect a good results from such school?

If the MEC and Mannya dont gets their acts together 2012 will be worst! Temporary teachers were not motivated in 2011 and the same is going to happen in 2012.

I'M ALSO WORRIED ABOUT THE WAY OUR MANAGEMENT DONE THINGS IN OUR PROVINCE BCOZ LAST YEAR WE HAVE PROBLEM OF TEMPORAL EDUCATORS NOT RENEWING THEIR CONTRACTS AND NOW THIS YEAR THEY ARE STILL NOT COMING WITH A GOOD PLAN FOR THIS

The Eastern Cape have not done as bad as it is made to sound. 58% is not at all bad. The reason it looks bad is because we happen to be at the bottom. In other words, we are the 'worst' performing province. Reality tells me that, of the learners that sat for the final examination in this province, the majority did pass. It is just unfortunate that we occupy the last spot on the list.

Further analysis also shows that the Eastern Cape is not the only province whose results have declined. It's also not the province with the largest decline in its pass rate. Even if we could have obtained 59%, we will still be getting the last position in the standings, even though we would have improved.

The subject that has received the worst result is Mathematics. This is not the first time that this subject has received this 'status'. There are a multiple of factors that contribute to this unfortunate result. Some of which have been brought forward, yet no one seems to be taking relevant steps to solve the problem.

What is comforting about this year's Mathematics results is the fact that raw scores were taken. In other words, the marks were not adjusted. 46% pass rate in Mathematics, Nationally, means the whole country faces a crisis as far as Mathematics is concerned.

I just want to congratulate Mr DJA Smeda and his team because without their time and proper management, Cradock woudn't be the best District in 2011 and it's so sad that the Big Man has already started his retirement this month. Mine is to say, if we can focus more on our work and do away with the politics in this province, things can get better. Let us stop this blaming game people and go back to read our Vision, Mission and also our Pledge as officials of this Department, "Mhlawumbi ingenza utshintsho kwingcinga zakho nawe"

Its good to see that the Department of Education is able to acknowledge and identify the challenges faced by our schools in the EC and congratulations to Cradock. But has the Department thought long enough on the problem of staff establishment as one of the major courses of the results? Do we have any solutions to this problem?
