The audible blare about service delivery to schools which last year saw the Eastern Cape education department being visited by President Jacob Zuma, has been prioritised by the department this year such that on the 17th of January 2012, MEC Mandla Makupula will be visiting Sobantu and Minenkulu Senior Secondary schools, in the Peddie district at 09h00.
Although the visit forms part of the legislative responsibilities of the MEC in the first ten days after schools have been opened, most importantly to assist and monitor school functionality. This year, the department has put more focus on ensuring that schools are equipped to enhance teaching and learning, the core business of the department.
The visits also compliment the multi-disciplined teams that have been dispatched to all the department’s 23 districts to assist with issues that hinder teaching on the first day of schooling, and those include amongst others:
- Challenges of learner enrolment and general registration;
- Availability of teaching and learning tools;
- School staffing and school functionality
The MEC Mandla Makupula seeks to emphasise on practicality and early teaching to close any identified knowledge and content gaps on time on all grades. The media is therefore invited to be part of these visits as they include briefings that are scheduled after each.
