23 December 2008 – Umalusi, the Council for quality assurance in general and further education and training, today announced that it has approved the release of the 2008 National Senior Certificate examination results.
2008 is the first year learners sat the new National Senior Certificate. The new three year curriculum was introduced in 2006 at the Grade 10 level and replaces the previous Senior Certificate (Matric).
Umalusi also approved the NSC examinations offered by the independent assessment bodies – IEB and OAER.
Professor John Volmink, Chairperson of the Umalusi Council said, “After studying the current information and evidence at hand which was obtained from the examination quality assurance processes, the Umalusi Council declares that the standard and conduct of the 2008 national examination results for National Senior Certificate is consistent with regulations and policy and the release of the results are therefore approved.”
“Umalusi used rigorous quality assurance methods to assure the assessment results and to confirm the credibility of the National Senior Certificate. Umalusi approves the assessment instruments (question papers) and also moderates the marking to ensure adherence and consistency. We also monitored all aspects of the conduct of examinations through a comprehensive and integrated monitoring process ranging from self-evaluation by assessment bodies, verification by Umalusi, sampling of examination and marking centres, direct monitoring and shadowing of monitors,” explained Vijayen Naidoo, Senior Manager, Quality Assurance of Assessment: Umalusi. “Planning for the standardisation of this year's results commenced in 2007 with Umalusi developing a model to support the standardisation of the NSC. In addition a very comprehensive “Maintaining Standards” project was undertaken. This project provided valuable qualitative input regarding the NSC curriculum as well as the standard of the NSC question paper in relation to the curriculum and question papers in the Senior Certificate.”
Umalusi assures the standards of the assessment but is not responsible for the outcome of the results. Sourcel: www.umalusi.org.za
