The Department will embark on a very critical initiative to deal with the root cause of poor learner performance in literacy and numeracy; the project is called Mother Tongue-Based Bilingual Education, dedicated personnel are now in place to drive that project. Preparations are currently being made to ensure full-scale implementation of this initiative in January 2011. Part of the work that is currently underway includes the review and development of language policies.

The Eastern Cape Department of Education (ECDoE) has introduced a new way of learning mathematics through an exciting electronic medium which has seen 423 schools utilising the medium and a science, while 399 schools have been provided with music and technical subject software, provincially.
