Motshekga on the National Teachers' strike
The national teachers’ strike has been a major blow to public education, and has had a particularly devastating effect on the education of poor, rural and black children. I am pleased that the industrial action is now probably behind us and that we can begin the process of stabilizing our schools.

Today the MEC welcomed two officials from the National Department of Education who were introduced by the Director General, Mr Duncan Hindle at a meeting with the Eastern Cape Top Management. These officials are Mr Martin Mulcahy and Mr Sihle Mlambo who will conduct an analysis and evaluation of the education system.

Of the 60 297 learners who wrote the exams, 30 494 passed, which constitutes 50,6%. The following three districts are the best performing provincially:Graaf Reinett–70.1%; Port Elizabeth–68.6%, and; Grahamstown–66.6%
